Tetris Wouldn't Win at This Gaming Ceremony — A New Category Might Solve This

Whenever a prominent prize-giving event draws close, one notices a clamor for introducing additional classifications to recognize underappreciated efforts and delight the passions of enthusiasts with niche passions.

Another commentator has already made advocating for terror-themed awards. That would be fantastic. Equally deserving are board games, which is a dedicated supporter's campaign. But they will have to forgive me if I try to elbow in front just as with other blinkered fanatics, there's a strong justification for why my demand is the most urgent above others. Here's the proposal: It's essential to create an award type for logic-based games.

Categorizing Game Types

Organizing artistic expressions is not a science; it’s very subjective, and inevitably spark debates concluding with vague boundaries. It's understandable that cinema institutions avoid this approach. However, it represents an unavoidable compromise in the world of gaming, showing incredible range they barely qualify a single creative category.

To recognize the complete range of achievement in video games to be recognized, and for games of all stripes to compete fairly, specific award classifications remain vital.

Existing Game Classification System

Prominent interactive entertainment events offer these classifications covering Action, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these six categories effectively encompass a lot of ground, allowing placement for most games within them.

Not so for brain-teasing titles. No suitable classification appears to put them. Examine these examples from recent excellent titles, showing diverse approaches: structural challenges in a particular game, fast-paced pattern recognition of another game, engaging interpersonal challenges in another game. What category would fit them within current classifications? Simply put, no category fits.

The Representation Problem

Numerous examples exist of brilliant puzzle games published annually lacking appropriate categories during gaming ceremonies, unless they happen to qualify classification types such as Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested independent game categories.

  • One classic puzzle game got overlooked for anything that year
  • Another creative title missed out that year
  • Popular arranging title was overlooked in 2021
  • Just some logic titles scraped into small studio or handheld classifications

Significance of Puzzle Games

Frequently they represent compact experiences, yet the craft in brain-teasers is of massive significance. Well-known matching games count as the most-played games globally continuing this trend for over a decade.

The iconic tile-matching title competes with well-known building titles claiming status as most purchased experience; it’s also in the running for top gaming experience. Puzzle games are foundational within interactive entertainment, and engaging with almost every other genre.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Puzzle games wouldn’t have such difficulty. You could fill five nominees interesting, varied, worthy titles annually without trouble — or rather, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave many worthy titles.

And to reiterate, these represent titles without proper classification during prominent ceremonies. Logic title developers operate at the challenging frontier of video game design, developing some of essential manifestations within interactive entertainment. Similar to movie stunt professionals, they deserve recognition. Let’s not keep them waiting decades.
