British Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have conducted a mission with French aircraft in a combined operation on an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory used by the Daesh militant organization, according to the UK's MoD.

The site, located using intelligence, was assessed as housing weapons and explosive materials, the statement said, and was located in mountainous terrain just to the north of the historic site of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"The RAF jets employed laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to strike a several access tunnels leading to the facility... initial indications are that the objective was successfully hit," officials stated.

There was no sign of any civilian casualties in the operation on Saturday evening and every plane involved returned safely, the MoD added.

The Typhoon FGR4s were supported by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

IS - alternatively referred to as Daesh - imposed jihadist rule over large swathes of both Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This action shows British leadership, and resolve to operate in unison with our partners, to eliminate any revival of Daesh and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the Middle East," Britain's Defence Chief the minister remarked.

British military aircraft have conducted surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "forestall any efforts to regroup" of the group after its defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the MoD reported.

"I want to thank all the members of the UK armed forces involved in this operation for their skill and their courage," he commented. "Including them were numerous British personnel on duty over Christmas and New Year. This operation, to eliminate dangerous terrorists who endanger our safety, shows how British military are ready to step up, throughout the year, keeping Britain secure at home and strong abroad."

During December, the American forces executed what it called a "large-scale strike" on Daesh sites in Syria, following an attack resulted in the deaths of two US troops and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The U.N. estimates Islamic State still maintains between 5,000 and 7,000 combatants in Iraq and Syria.
