Trump’s most recent ultimatum to impose an extra full import duty on products from China has been described as a “classic case” of American hypocrisy, as stated by the Beijing administration.

A Commerce Ministry spokesperson additionally remarked that China could introduce its own unspecified “retaliatory steps” if the US President executes his threat, emphasizing that the country was “fearless” of a possible trade conflict.

Last Friday, Trump retaliated at the Chinese government’s action to strengthen its regulations for overseas sales of critical elements, charging the Chinese leadership of “adopting a confrontational stance” and attempting to hold the global community “hostage”.

Additionally, he threatened to withdraw from a planned meeting with Chinese leader Xi, which was expected to take place during a meeting in the Republic of Korea later this month.

The former president’s remarks on last Friday unsettled global markets, with the S&P 500 share index falling by nearly three percent, marking its largest decline since last spring.

His comments revived concerns of a trade war between the United States and China.

In May, the respective governments had reached an agreement to remove significant levies on each other’s imports, which had raised the prospect of trade halting between the economic powers.

This left, American import duties on Chinese goods subject to an extra import tax compared with the start of the year, while items from the United States entering the Chinese market incur a import levy.

China’s latest remarks – issued by the relevant government department in the manner of formal replies to journalist’s questions – echoed language from the height of the latest commercial tensions.

They criticised US export restrictions on chips and semi-conductors while defending the country’s own export controls on rare earth minerals as “standard procedures” to protect state interests and that of the global community.

Their representative said that for “an extended period”, the US had “overstretched the concept of domestic safety, misused overseas sale restrictions and “implemented” biased policies against China.

“Resorting to trade levy ultimatums is not the correct approach to interact with the Chinese government,” the official said.

“The nation’s view” on a trade conflict has remained steady: we are not seeking one, but we are fearless of one.”

Recently, China revealed it was reinforcing overseas sale regulations on key elements and further resources essential to high-technology production.

The action was viewed as a significant step, as the country processes about ninety percent of the planet’s critical minerals, which are utilized in products such as renewable energy components and mobile phones.

New remarks from both governments are being viewed by analysts as a method of strengthening positions prior to future trade talks.

Remains uncertain whether a summit between Donald Trump and Xi Jinping, expected at a high-level meeting in the Republic of Korea later this month, will still proceed.
